Happy Halloween

Is Halloween the Devil's holiday or innocent fun, or something in between? And how should Christians respond?

Here is a printable copy of a sermon. Pastor Josh gave last year about Halloween, its roots, and how it can be used to engage our culture and share the Gospel.

Just wanted to say that Halloween is coming and on that "holiday" I will celebrate my 40th year as a born again child of God!

Yeah, it was a Halloween Party, complete with spook house and apple bobbing, costumes spooky, silly and sensuous that my prepared heart first accepted the truth of the Gospel.

It is interesting that through the years, that I rejected Halloween as something a "believer" would not participate in. You could say that I succumbed to the "fear of the world", and chose to sequester my children from the world's way. And I think that we need to be careful, that we walk a fine line as we reach out to the world and still avoid being part of it.

I did not have the teaching, the perspective that I have gained since I started nursing school, that the world is out there and they need our love and influence. In my day it was sort of "if they won't conform to Jesus stay away from them". It sounds ridiculous to me now. But we learn as we age, hopefully. Now I say "engage the culture!".

But still, be aware who is training your children. Who is it that influences their values. Who do they consider wise?

I think that the rejection of Halloween I succumbed to as a young mother was silly. But I still believe it is a jungle out there, and parents needs to be purposeful and in control of what their children learn, and what forms their character.

We need to be obedient to God as His servants, and as parents, and we must hold our children before Him prayer.
